For those of you who who have been with us for the best month or so, you’ve probably heard us mention about wanting to get back to our original goal of more interactivity. With that being said we’re doing a new monthly cover contest here at the site. The bands/artists will have all of July to submit their cover and it ends July 31st, with a new one beginning August 1st and so on. The cover itself will not be judged by audio fidelity (but please record on something better than your smartphone), but instead by things such as fun factor and spirit of the original etc.

The first cover will be Quiet Riot’s version of “Cum On Feel The Noize”, and yes, we know it is a cover also. But what started off as an in-joke between Myles and I will now lead the pack (even though I originally wanted to, and still do want to do a Gaslight Anthem song one day). For those of you not familiar with the song, we have embedded the video below.

And now for the prizes! Earshot Records and Cabin Floor Records will both be providing a $25 gift certificate apiece. The Handlebar will be providing two free tickets to any show (up to $40 value),The Radio Room will be providing a $20 gift certificate and a free pass to every show there in August and Ground Zero in Spartanburg will be providing a free show pass for any and every show in August also. Also our good friends at WSBF have gotten together a “swag pack” for you including a T-shirt and shot glasses (pictured below), and last but not least, Upstate Recordings and Management has agreed to professionally record the winner’s cover for them (1-day session).

So yes, you have all of July to record and submit your cover with the winner being announced in early August. Also Soundcloud and Bandcamp links are preferred, but whatever poison you pick is fine. Happy covering, and like The Highlander, there can be only one! Please submit inquiries to Wes@wearetheupstate.com and feel free to post your submission on our Facebook wall for others to hear! If you post it on Twitter, use the hashtag #WATUcover so others can find it there!
